Twin Cities Deck Construction & Replacement
First Impressions Exteriors is a Twin Cities deck contractor specializing in new construction, full replacement, and deck reskinning for residential and multi-family properties. We bring the same hands-on craftsmanship and attention to detail to every deck project that our customers have trusted for years on their roofs and siding.
Deck Services from Your Twin Cities Deck Contractor
First Impressions Exteriors offers three types of deck services for residential and multi-family properties throughout the Twin Cities metro.
New Deck Construction — We design and build new decks from the ground up. Whether you want a simple ground-level platform or a multi-level structure with stairs and railing, we build something that fits your property and your budget.
Deck Replacement — If your existing deck is structurally compromised, rotting, or past its useful life, a full replacement is often the smartest long-term investment. We remove the old structure and build new to current code.
Deck Reskinning — If your frame is sound but the surface is worn or damaged, reskinning restores the look and function of your deck without a full tear-off.
Materials We Work With
We work with all major decking materials so you can choose what fits your goals, your maintenance preferences, and your budget.
Pressure-Treated Wood The most affordable option for new builds. Durable, widely available, and a proven choice for Minnesota’s climate when properly installed and maintained.
Cedar A natural, attractive option with good resistance to moisture and insects. A popular choice for homeowners who want a traditional wood aesthetic.
Composite Decking Brands like Trex and TimberTech offer low-maintenance composite decking that resists fading, staining, and moisture. An excellent long-term investment.
PVC Decking Fully synthetic and highly durable, Azek is one of the leading PVC decking brands and stands up exceptionally well to Minnesota’s freeze-thaw cycles. PVC requires minimal maintenance and is a strong option for high-traffic or exposed applications.
Deck Footing Options
The foundation of a deck is just as important as the surface you walk on. First Impressions Exteriors uses three types of footings depending on soil conditions, deck height, load requirements, and local code.
Standard Concrete Footings
The most common footing type for residential decks. Concrete is poured into a hole dug below the frost line, which in Minnesota is typically 42 inches deep. Standard concrete footings are reliable, code-compliant, and the right choice for most ground-level and single-story elevated decks.
Diamond Piers
Diamond Piers are a helical-style driven pier system that installs without digging or concrete. Four steel fins are driven into the ground using a hydraulic tool, anchoring the pier below the frost line quickly and with minimal site disturbance. Diamond Piers are an excellent option when site conditions make traditional excavation difficult or when a faster installation timeline is needed.
Helical Piers
Helical piers are steel screw-type piles driven deep into stable soil below the frost line. They offer exceptional load capacity and are ideal for larger or elevated deck structures where a standard concrete footing would not provide sufficient support. Helical piers are also used when soil conditions are unstable or when building on a slope.

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of decks do you build?
We build ground-level decks, elevated decks, multi-level decks, and wrap-around decks for residential and multi-family properties throughout the Twin Cities metro.
Do you handle permits?
Yes. Deck projects in Minnesota typically require a building permit and we handle that process as part of the project.
How long does a deck build take?
Most residential deck projects take one to two weeks depending on size, materials, and complexity. We’ll give you a realistic timeline before work begins.
What’s the difference between deck replacement and reskinning?
Replacement involves removing the entire structure and starting fresh. Reskinning keeps the existing frame and replaces only the decking surface and worn components.
Do you work on multi-family properties?
Yes. We work with property owners and managers on multi-family deck projects of varying scale.
What areas do you serve?
We serve the Twin Cities metro and surrounding communities in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
